2026 ntm conference educator workshop

March 7, 2026 (8:00 AM - 4:30 PM) at ʻIolani School in Honolulu, HI

We’re excited to invite you to the Educator Workshop for the 2026 NTM Conference.

This one day workshop is designed for high school and undergraduate educators with interests in microbiology, molecular biology, genomic science, bioinformatics, and infectious disease. Participants will gain hands-on experience performing whole genome sequencing of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) DNA derived from location-based environmental sampling.

Open to grade 9-12 life sciences teachers from all islands (with limited travel support for first time neighbor island teachers). Preference will be given to teachers who have attended our 2025 KAK NTM Workshop and teachers who have already participated in AIN NTM lessons.

summer 2025 - kula aʻo kālaiōewe

Applications are now open for our annual Kula Aʻo Kālaiōewe Genome Science Intensive! Suited for high school life science educators, join us to learn foundational molecular lab techniques (DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and next-generation sequencing using the Nanopore MinION platform), biotechnology, and bioethics.

Airfare and accommodations covered for first time, neighbor island participants!

stemplus x nā wai ʻekolu meeting series

Launched in 2015, Nā Wai ‘Ekolu is a hui of K-12 educators and community members from the Mānoa, Pālolo, and Makiki stream areas. Dedicated to developing stewards who monitor and restore the health of our watershed, this group also collaborates on creating and sharing curriculum while actively working to protect our streams.

Join us as we answer the call of “What do our waters need from us?”

water quality

Discover where and when the hottest temperatures occur in your stream and the factors that contribute to these conditions. Join us to learn about key water quality parameters, their interrelationships, and their impact on the health of native stream animals and habitats, with insights from UH-Tsang Stream Lab hydrologist Yin Phan Tsang. You'll also receive a kit equipped with everything your students need to begin monitoring temperature and more.

invasive species

Healthy streams depend on surrounding land areas rich in plant life, but invasive species like CRB pose a threat to these vital plants. Community-driven detection and prevention are essential to protect culturally and agriculturally significant species such as niu, loulu, and hala. Join us as we hear from the Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry Program and the Plant Extinction Prevention Program. Learn how to keep CRB off our school campuses and safeguard future groves by establishing a campus nursery.
